A weekend of food

It seems as though it's been a weekend of non-stop eating in our household. It all got off to a great start at Angela Hartnett's Mayfair restaurant Murano on Friday where we celebrated a double birthday and indulged ourselves over four delicious courses, the highlight of which (for me at least) was a superb white truffle risotto.

We decided to give the Taste Festival up in Regent's Park a miss, and headed instead to the Marylebone Summer Fayre where there were literally dozens of stalls serving up mouth watering treats. After pigging out on a pulled pork sandwich, I made a beeline to Peter Gordon's Providores stall, where they were serving up excellent Chorizo burgers in soft granary baps.

To follow, I decided to try two of Gordon's risottos to see how they stacked up against the Murano offering. I shared a smoked mackerel risotto and also a pea risotto with my wife. Both of these were very good, with fresh summery flavours, but ultimately they were no match for the delicate, complex flavours of Hartnett's triumphant dish.

But maybe that was expecting too much, after all the dish at Murano was around four times the cost of the Providores offering.

Panama Stowaway Overshirt from S.E.H Kelly

S.E.H Kelly's latest creation further blurs the line between light unlined jackets and heavy overshirts, being fashioned from a rigid, robust Lancastrian twill. Cut-wise, the body is narrower and the arms slightly shorter than Kelly's previous overshirts, with two roomy front pockets and rounded collars. As the manufacturer states, it's happiest worn over a t-shirt or shirt as an easy top layer. Which is another way of saying it's perfect for keeping you warm on a chilly summer evening when you're strolling back from the pub.

Hamilton MIL-W-46374

Standard issue throughout the Vietnam era to American GI's, the Hamilton MIL-W-46374 is a classic military watch with an easy to read 24-hour dial and 17-jewel Swiss movement.
If the face looks familiar, it's probably because it's inspired popular miltary style watches like J.Crew's Timex, and Seiko's SNX425. If you want a proper military issued watch with a bit of history, you can still pick Hamilton MILs up in good condition on eBay for less than £150.

New workwear from Workers Japan

One of the great things about being registered for the Workers newsletter is seeing their latest designs pop up. This month, Takashi Tateno's creations have a definite Casey Jones flavour about them - striped railroad jackets, robust looking overalls and engineer's shirts, and to top it all off, a striped railwayman's cap. From what I've seen so far, Takashi takes his designs very seriously, and no doubt these latest garments will have been the result of some thorough research into minutiae of vintage railroaders' workwear. Even if his customers are more likely to be wearing them on the Tokaido Shinkansen than the Cannonball Express.
